The Sociologue & Writer Ali EL KENZ dies aged 74. Obituary
Born in 1946 in Skikda (Algeria), Ali EL Kenz worked as assistant teacher of philosophy at Algiers University from 1970 until 1974, then as professor of sociology at the same university until 1993. He was also the director of the Center of Research in Economics Applied to Development located in Algiers. After working as Associate Professor at the University Tunis I from 1993 to 1995, he occupied the post of Associate Professor of Sociology at Nantes University since 1995. In addition, he assumed several responsibilities at the Arab Association of Sociology as well as in CODESRIA and the FTM in Dakar.
His main research themes include labor, development, and sociology of sciences. As for his main sites for observation and analysis, they comprise Algeria, the Arab World and Africa. His experience as Visiting Professor at Princeton University (USA) in 2000, as well as his delegation to the Institute of Research about Development (2003-2006) have contributed to shape the intellectual profile of Nantes Institute for Advanced Study where Ali El Kenz assumed the responsibility of scientific advisor in the field of “knowledge and societies”.
